I’m a serious coffee drinker, and I am aware that because of that, my teeth are becoming quite stained. That’s why today I am attempting to investigate natural ways to whiten teeth.
I’m not into using products with too many chemicals, and lately I am trying to be a little bit more eco-friendly.
My skin always responds better when I use natural products, as does my body when I nourish it with clean foods.
So I figure it must be the same with my teeth?
Firstly, What Can Cause Stains And Yellowing Of Teeth?

Everyday superficial staining of teeth can happen when eating and drinking certain things. The common ones are:
- Soy sauce
- Balsamic Vinegar
- Tomato Sauce
- Blueberries
- Grape
- Cranberry Juice
- Coffee – oops.
- Black Tea
- Red Wine
- Fizzy drinks such as cola
There are other factors that can cause staining and yellowing of tooth enamel, such as smoking, too much flouride as a child, and ageing.
Try These 2 Natural Ways To Whiten Teeth

There are a gazillion products on the UK teeth whitening market.
I just have to take a trip into Boots and I’m seriously overwhelmed by the choice.
1. Coconut Oil Pulling

Oil pulling – which I and many others have tried before – is an interesting ancient Ayurvedic technique where you swish a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and around your tongue and teeth for up to 20 minutes.
In doing this, it’s meant to draw toxins out of your body to improve oral health.
Not only does it improve your oral health, it can be used to improve your overall health, too.
You can simply use a jar of organic coconut oil (or any other natural food-grade oil).
What you have to be careful of is not to swallow any of the oil, as it’s supposed to be full of the toxins it’s ‘pulled’ out of the mouth.
You can also experience a ‘detox headache’ whilst doing it, so be sure to research this method fully before you start.
2. Activated Charcoal Teeth Whitening Strips

Activated charcoal is not what’s left after you’ve burned your sausages on a bbq 😉
Here’s a good explanation.
I recently tried out Teeth Whitening Strips with Activated Charcoal, which I found to be a great way to subtly whiten teeth.
You might have a wedding, a special event or a date, and you want your smile to look fab… well little strips these might be the answer.
They are these brilliant, black, pliable, mouldable (is that a word?) little strips that you put over your teeth for 30 minutes a day for 14 consecutive days.
I really like how they are tasteless, and they are really easy to keep in your mouth whilst they are doing their thang.
I wasn’t sure whether they would be plastic strips, but they amounted to a sort of gooey paste when the 30 minutes were up.
Here were my teeth at the start of the trial…

This is day 3…
I feel like my teeth look cleaner and sparkling a little!

Day 7…
You can see some staining still around the gumline, but my teeth are definitely looking whiter.

Day 10…

And this is the AFTER (14 days)…
I feel like my teeth look cleaner, with less staining around my gumline and between the teeth that cross over a bit.

When you look at the images side by side, it’s easier to see the changes through the days.
